Dolgellau 15.v.15 Caernarfon
                             [Div 1 North] 24.04.2018

Anyone who turned up on the Marian expecting an end of season stroll under the floodlights quickly found out that neither of these two sides were going to ease on the brakes, in what turned out to be a pretty even and uncompromising contest, that often simmered and occasionally boiled over.

A break by Dolgellau full-back, Gareth Hughes, deep into Caernarfon territory after ten minutes, resulted in stand-off, Gerwyn Thomas putting Dolgellau ahead with a penalty. Dolgellau skipper, Rhys Roberts, found wing Dafydd Ellis with a clever lobbed pass, and the speedy winger was away and found centre Dylan Evans outside ,and who sprinted home for a great home try to put Dolgellau 8-0 ahead after twenty five minutes.

The tackling was ferocious and brutal at times, and Dolgellau second row, Marius Jones, saw yellow, following an illegal tackle on half way. Dolgellau were punished from the resulting penalty, as a Caernarfon catch and drive from the line-out five meters out, saw outstanding openside, Mike Downey, go over on the blind side of the maul. Thus a very even first half ended with Dolgellau ahead by 8-5.

Five minutes into the second period, Dolgellau flanker, Guto Jones and no.8 Dylan Llewelyn combined to give hooker, Cellan Evans, just enough space to squeeze over for his first senior try in only his second appearance. Gerwyn Thomas put over the conversion to give Dolgellau a 15-5 cushion.

However Caernarfon were far from finished, and they hit a purple patch mid-way through the half.  Their backs moved left and a clever chip by replacement full-back, Iolo Hughes, was gathered by wing Dylan Gwyn to crash over in the corner.  Only four minutes later, with Caernarfon forwards threatening the Dolgellau line, the ball was switched to left and winger Dylan Gwyn dived over for his second try to bring the visitors level, and set up a frantic last ten minutes.

Despite both sides gamely searching for the winner, it was Dolgellau who came closest when a Gerwyn Thomas penalty went wide, with less than five minutes remaining.
